Ginger Beer

i found this ginger beer bottle which has a similiar design im looking for. And it has a similar bottle shape to mine.

The decorative typography on the word Bundaberg works well, i could some characteristics from the fonts and apply to my own ideas. The sunshine behind the kangaroo works well.

This label could be only Two spot colours, Black and Red. Because the the orange and the yellow could be tints of the red. I think this would be a big expensive run because i have seen this drink in a fare few places.

More vintage packaging

More Wood

This is a beautiful package for Glenlivet whiskey. Another example to show that products in wooden boxes look amazing!

This would be in an very high price bracket to produce because of the quality of the wood and all the fixtures that you get with it. If you were to buy this it would set you back £176. So they have the designers have taken every care into making this product look quality.

Style / Approach

I want my branding to the brain tonic to sort of look like all these things, but even better.

i think this is what computer would look like in the 1970's if it could do what computers could do now.

New Zealand Deer

Deer antler is a common ingredient in Chinese tonic preparations. It may be surprising, especially to the practitioner of Chinese medicine, to learn that New Zealand is the world's largest producer of deer antler, followed closely by Australia and Canada (both increasing rapidly), and that Korea is probably the world's largest user of antlers, with an apparently insatiable appetite for antlers of all species. China is also a major producer and consumer of deer antler products and appears to have the longest history of medicinal use of deer antler as well as production via deer farming.

Different Packaging

These wines i think are packaged beautifully. Put into a wooden box (i love wooden boxes) and a glass front with white typography and patterns. I also like the little touch of hay behind the bottles. The glass would probably been screen printed and its only one colour so it would be a relatively simple job although i have never screen printed on glass before so i'm not sure it there are any complications. It would have been a relatively small run because its a private brewer and screen printing one colour isn't that expensive.

Mmmmm vitamins

These vitamins have some nice packaging. They look a bit more professional and appealing than an average vitamin container. These would have been litho because they would have printed a lot of labels to make it cheaper then put on the containers because vitamins are cheap to produce and a lot of people buy them.

They would have saved money also by using only one spot colour and its tints.

Nice invites

These are invitations to a wedding and a party. They both work on the fact that they are interactive and you have to spin the wheel to get all the information.

They have only used one colour and then used different tints to create the effect that there are more. I would of thought that these would of been printed digitally because partys and weddings dont usually have huge amounts of people invited.

But then again the second one looks embossed so it could have been litho print and embossed after. So the second one would have been quite expensive.

They are both very innovative designs with nice use of type which makes them look brilliant. I would definitely RSVP yes.

Dollar bills yo

Ive always loved the detail and complexity of money notes. One of my favourites has to be the american one dollar bill though. I want something like these detailed line drawings on my product in my Good project.

This design would probably be the biggest commercial print job ever, there is 4 billion one dollar notes in circulation at any one time. 16,600,00 are printed a day, yes a DAY! this is because an average life span of a dollar note is only 21 months so they need to replace all the damaged ones. Stock consists of 25% linen 75% cotton

Medicine - Brain Tonic

I think i will steer away from the medicine idea and change it only slightly to the idea of a brain tonic made from antlers. Its still a medicine, but a little less 'strict'.

My idea of brain tonic is the bizarre 'cure for everything' that cowboys and people used to have in the 1800's and early 1900's.

With this idea i have more scope for making it humorous if i wanted and also it fits in perfectly with the 'old style' packaging i have been looking at.

I have finally found a bottle that looks great and i can order in low numbers in the UK! Here is the bottle i have ordered (it will come with a cork also)

This will now help me with the design of the label because i know it will wrap around a round bottle.

Original Tonic

One hundred and twenty-four years, Dr. John Pemberton first brewed something he called "Esteemed Brain Tonic and Intellectual Beverage," to be sold to "scientists, scholars, poets, divines, lawyers, physicians, and others devoted to extreme mental exertion."

This beverage is now called Coca Cola.

Brain Tonic

Instead of medicine i thought i could promote the antler medicinal qualities like a Brain Tonic. The sort of ones they had hundreds of years ago.

Mr Burns - "instead of beer, from now on you'll all be drinking this. It's a brain and nerve tonic, rich in proteins and electromagnetic juices. It promotes robust health. Of course, it has been known to cause gigantism, but only in rare cases. Try some!"

Medical symbols

Caduceus is a symbol used in Greek mythology that represented Mercury. It has two snakes wrapped around a staff with wings at the top in a helix.

The rod of Asclepius is the symbol of the Greek God Asclepuis who was the son of Apollo who was a practitioner of medicine and healing in Greek Mythology. Therefor a symbol of medicine.

But the US Army medical corps got confused with the Rod of Asclepius (Which has one snake around a staff) and the Cadaceus in the early 20th century. Since theh everyone seemed to copy the mistake so now the Cadaceus has become the symbol of medicine.

Glass containers

I found some glass bottle type things in some shops. They have wide corked tops which my not be best for a 'liquid'

These two i found were good but a little bit to large and small.

This redesign of Zubrowka vodka. I like when packages have natural colours in them and natural nice aesthetic materials to compliment the design like the cork and the string.

Colour, fool.

Boa Boca Gourmet is a company that produces quality foods. They have used different colours to show the difference in there range of products. Its a simple and very effective design strategy.

This is a nice example of how simple colour and shape can be a very effective and eye catching design. This looks like its been done on a thick stock and has been folded to create a folder.

Packaging

I have been looking at old packaging from the early 20th century. This is because they look really good and time and care have gone into each design. Another reason which fits in well with my Good brief is that my target audience is of the older variety of people. Because when you get old you have more health problems so medicine is needed more. If i used a sort vintage/old design approach to the packaging of the medicine it would make the target audience feel more nostalgic and maybe more at ease so the medicine would have a better effect.

I was checking out old vintage design for different things. Although they are worn and sometimes rusty i think this old approach to branding has a nostalgia to it. I think they must have mass produced these by printing right onto the metal and then folding it afterwards

I was researching into bottles i could get for my good project. It took me hours to find nothing. All the companies either don't sell the glass bottle im looking for or they do have the sort of style i want but the minimum order is 100! But these are the sort of bottles i had envisaged.

Medicine Containers

For research into medicine packaging i started to look at modern ones but they were bland and plastic. So i started to look at older medicine packages some of them look really interesting.

Antlers

Another idea i had was to portray the antlers as icons of power. Stags use there antlers as displays of power and strength. I thought i could gather groups of powerful men present and past and put antlers on them to give a visual point of power.

Thinking about product and range maybe i could create several books with the pictures of the powerful men with antlers. Each book could have a category. Evil men, Good men, Stars and Geniuses. I could even use the same imagery to create posters. Within this book i could talk about why these men were powerful.

Antlers

An idea was to use the Medicinal purposes of antlers and produce a range of medicine. Through my research i have discovered that the velvet and the actual bone part of the antler has been used. Because there are a lot of Antlered deer this gives me a wide scope for product and range.

For each deer the medicine could cure a different medical problem. So the product could be called 'Antler Medicine' for instance and then moose antler could be for pain endurance, elk could be an aphrodisiac, red deer could be for arthritis and so forth.

Howling Monkey

Howling monkey beer. This packaging i love because of the vintage look about it. Its different and definitely has the wow factor. The style of it reminds me of the design on money notes

It has 3 colours but clever use of tint on the black gives the impression of more colours. The stock would have to be quite thick to hold 6 bottles of beer.

Gin packaging

Gin. A small independent spirit brewer in Brooklyn New York has this amazing package for Gin.

It shows that you don't need lashings of colour and sometimes black and white work perfectly.

I would of thought that because it is an independent brewer that the printing would have been digitally rather than litho because it wouldn't be a huge job.
